It\u2019s legal. In just a few places national services hit the brakes if the couple needs donated eggs or embryos.<\/p>\n Things are harder for\u00a0female-female couples or single women<\/strong>, and even more so for\u00a0trans or intersex people<\/strong>. A lot harder. Even in countries where you might think there would be no discrimination. In fact, it wasn\u2019t until June of this year that\u00a0France<\/strong>\u00a0allowed access<\/a>\u00a0to assisted reproductive technology (ART) for these groups.\u00a0Norway<\/strong>\u00a0gave\u00a0single women access in 2020<\/a>, just a short time ago.<\/p>\n [\/et_pb_text][\/et_pb_column][et_pb_column type=”2_5″ _builder_version=”4.16″ _module_preset=”default” global_colors_info=”{}”][et_pb_blurb title=” ” admin_label=”Blurb” _builder_version=”4.16″ _module_preset=”default” custom_padding=”2px|2px|2px|2px|false|false” border_width_all=”3px” border_color_all=”#428aca” global_colors_info=”{}”]<\/p>\n Artificial insemination<\/strong>, or intrauterine, is a technique based on the introduction of semen in the uterus through a cannula.\u00a0In vitro fertilisation<\/strong>, on the other hand, is a technique that consists in extracting the egg and introducing the spermatozoon in it outside the uterus, in a laboratory. And then reintroducing the embryo back in the uterus.<\/p>\n [\/et_pb_blurb][\/et_pb_column][\/et_pb_row][et_pb_row _builder_version=”4.16″ _module_preset=”default” global_colors_info=”{}”][et_pb_column type=”4_4″ _builder_version=”4.16″ _module_preset=”default” global_colors_info=”{}”][et_pb_text _builder_version=”4.16″ _module_preset=”default” global_colors_info=”{}”]<\/p>\n Of the 43 countries analysed for this investigation,\u00a012 do not allow single women to access\u00a0in vitro<\/em>\u00a0fertilisation<\/strong>. Even more countries,\u00a016, also prevent single women from getting assisted insemination<\/strong>. The list of countries that prevent single women from getting a donated egg is even longer.<\/p>\n The situation is worse for\u00a0female couples: 24 countries ban their access to ART outright<\/strong>. For the LGTBIQ+ community, having children via ART is not an easy path in Europe. \u201cThe places where it\u2019s most difficult for LGTBIQ+ people to get a job or to be out or to get married or to undergo legal gender recognition are also the places where it\u2019s most difficult to have access to assisted reproductive technologies,\u201d says Cianan Russell, from\u00a0ILGA Europe<\/a>, a federation of European lesbian, gay, bisexual, trans and intersex rights groups. They say\u00a0Hungary and Poland<\/strong>\u00a0are the countries where the situation is the worst, but the problem is widespread in Europe. Even where people can obtain reproductive assistance legally on paper, reality sometimes brings \u201cdiscrimination, harassment or even violence\u201d to the process, Russell says.
