The International Press Institute (IPI), the European Center for Press and Media Freedom (ECPMF), the European Federation of Journalists (EFJ) and Osservatorio Balcani Caucaso Transeuropa (OBCT), state that “Air Mediterranean’s lawsuit bears several hallmarks of a SLAPP”.
IPI is joined by the undersigned Media Freedom Rapid Response (MFRR) partners in condemning the filing of abusive legal action by Air Mediterranean against the Greek investigative newsroom Mediterranean Institute for Investigative Reporting (MIIR), the newspaper Efimerida ton Syntakton (EfSyn) as well as their editors and directors.

Our organisations, which have long documented legal threats against media in Europe, today urge the Court of First Instance of Athens to treat the lawsuit by Air Mediterranean as an abusive lawsuit and to uphold European press freedom standards when assessing the case during the upcoming hearing on 21 May 2026.

MFRR partners regret that although the Greek government has indicated some level of preparation for the transposition of the EU Anti-SLAPP Directive, no concrete legislative amendments were adopted before the 7 May deadline.

Now that the deadline has passed, we urge the Greek authorities to take decisive action to ensure the EU Directive’s swift and effective implementation into national law. Reform of the civil code should also strengthen safeguards against domestic Strategic Lawsuits Against Public Participation (SLAPPs) which aim to silence quality public-interest journalism.

The lawsuit stems from a cross-border investigation by MIIR and its partners entitled “The Mediterranean Wings of the Underworld”, published in August 2025. Air Mediterranean, an Athens-based international airline company, initiated legal proceedings seven months later, targeting MIIR, EfSyn and the journalists who worked on the report. MIIR is a non-profit organisation with a reputation for hard hitting investigative data journalism and EfSyn is one of the major independent dailies in Greece.

The legal action followed an earlier complaint submitted by the airline’s legal representatives in August 2025, in which it rejected the reporting as “false and defamatory” and denied any links to criminal activity. In response, MIIR and EfSyn stated that the company had been given multiple opportunities to respond prior to publication in line with the applicable journalistic ethical standards and emphasised that the investigation adhered to journalistic standards and addressed issues of clear public interest.

The cross-border investigation was supported by Journalismfund Europe and published jointly by MIIR and Siraj (Syria), Daraj (Lebanon), VoxEurop (France and Belgium), and L’Espresso (Italy). It examined alleged links between the private Greek airline Air Mediterranean and individuals involved in arms, drug and migrant trafficking. It also raised serious questions about the oversight abilities of Greek, Italian and EU authorities.

Air Mediterranean targeted only the two Greek media outlets involved in the cross-border collaborations, while all four other media partners were excluded from litigation.

MFRR observes that Air Mediterranean’s lawsuit bears several hallmarks of a SLAPP: the amount of damages requested is excessive (EUR 100,000 jointly); there is an imbalance of power between the defendants and the claimant, given the company’s financial resources; and the lawsuit also appears to be aimed at suppressing public interest information.

Our organisations stand in solidarity with the teams at MIIR and EfSyn and remain committed to supporting them as the case progresses. We also express our solidarity with journalists in Greece who are repeatedly subjected to vexatious lawsuits intended to intimidate, create a chilling effect, and deter reporting on matters of clear public interest.

For years, Greece has been considered a high-risk country in Europe for SLAPPs. While some high-profile lawsuits against journalists in recent years have been dismissed, others continue to be fought, as in the case of.

Overall, this lawsuit demonstrates the urgent need for robust anti-SLAPP legislation in Greece, which covers both cross-border cases, as foreseen within the EU’s Anti-SLAPP Directive, but also wider protections against domestic SLAPP cases, as outlined in the Council of Europe’s 2024 Recommendation on SLAPPs.

Our organisations hope to see this lawsuit against MIIR, EfSyn and the journalists thrown out. We will continue to monitor this case and respond to further developments.

Seven months after the publication of the revealing, cross-border investigation by MIIR and its partners, which was published in “Efimerida ton Syntakton” (EfSyn) newspaper under the title “The Mediterranean Wings of the Underworld” (August 2, 2025), we were served with a lawsuit from the Greek airline AIR MEDITERRANEAN. The lawsuit against our team and EfSyn -requesting a total amount of one hundred thousand (100,000) euros- does not aim to remedy any “damage”, but to instill fear. A lawsuit carrying a message for anyone who insists on investigating shady activities: “Stay away.” It is a classic SLAPP, a case of strategic censorship that attempts to turn journalism into a legal risk and investigations into a financial threat.

This isn’t the first time. And unfortunately, it’s not an isolated incident for investigative journalism teams in Greece. In an environment where press freedom is systematically challenged and the rule of law is showing alarming cracks, such lawsuits have a cumulative effect: not only against the targeted journalists and media outlets, but against the public itself, which has a right to be informed.

Our reporting was not the product of speculation or insinuation, but the result of months of investigation, international collaboration, and meticulous documentation. The investigation received a grant from Journalismfund Europe and besides MIIR, was published in EfSyn newspaper, as well as our media partners: Siraj, Daraj, VoxEurop and L’Espresso. The principles of journalistic ethics were upheld – even when the plaintiffs chose not to respond to our questions. We absolutely stand behind every word.

We are not going to back down. Not because we can “afford” it – we are, after all, a small team with very limited resources – but because this is our job. To investigate, to ask questions, to cross-check, to expose – even when this becomes annoying. We call on our readers, our colleagues, and journalists’ unions in Greece and abroad to stand with us in the legal battle ahead, defending the right to free and independent information.

You can read οur investigation here: https://miir.gr/en/the-mediterranean-wings-of-the-underworld/

This year, our team is represented on two different panels.

– On Friday, September 26, 2025 (12:00-13:00) our colleague Konstantina Maltepioti, a data journalist specializing in open source research, web scraping, and data analysis, will participate in a journalism workshop on: How to use free satellite imagery and data to investigate natural disasters.

The panel, which also includes journalists Eurydice Bersi, Yannis Souliotis, and Tasos Telloglou (moderated by Fotini Kokkinaki), will examine how journalists can balance defending the truth and their independence with their ethical responsibility, when their investigations encounter human loss and the weight of social pressure.

What lies behind the celebratory headlines about Greece’s “heavy industry”, tourism? After poring over thousands of pages, liaising with tens of workers, officials, trade unionists and industry insiders, investigating in situ in Greece, Bulgaria and Romania, we uncovered a shady network of companies spanning the Balkans that funnels low-paid workers from abroad to work in Greek hotels, by taking advantage of EU legislation. While they are being lured by flashy internet ads egging them on to live their dream in sunny Greece, what they were faced with was indeed very, very different.

We are happy to announce that the Mediterranean Institute for Investigative Reporting is joning EDJNET, as the first based in Greece journalistic organisation.
The European Data Journalism Network (EDJNet) is a network of independent media organisations and data newsrooms producing and promoting data-driven coverage of European topics in several languages. The network brings together journalists, developers and policy experts. The network was set up in 2017, operates with the support of the European Commission and has 29 members based in 15 different countries

EDJNet works as a collaborative community, news aggregator, and learning hub.

The content produced is available for free in several languages. It can be syndicated or reused by anyone within and outside the network under a few simple conditions.

Original tools and curation services are provided to journalists, enabling any newsroom to take advantage of the opportunities offered by data journalism.

EDJNet helps its members reach out to new audiences by translating all the articles in several languages and disseminating them through its channels.

A collaborative infrastructure makes it easier for EDJNet members to analyse and explain relevant phenomena affecting the European societies.

More than 250 academics, professionals, journalists and researchers participated in the “Truth and Trust Online” conference, with public debate on fake news, misinformation, deepfakes and the very notion of confidence being enriched with the latest research and technology from the field of artificial intelligence and fact-checking.

Just a few of the admittedly quite numerous interesting addresses were the talk by Jerome Pesenti, Facebook’s vice president of ΑΙ, and the shared experiences of fact-checking teams from India, Argentina, South Africa and Iran. Also, the presentation made by Judy King, Director of Innovation at BBC Monitoring, and the speech by the director of the Reuters Institute, both conveyed the latest developments and challenges in the field of news verification, while Anja Belz, academic at the University of Bristol, sounded the alarm about the challenges that automation already brings to the newsroom.

MIIR had the chance to present its investigation on automated political propaganda on Twitter. We would like to thank everyone who passed through our “booth” and showed interest in our work, as well as the organizers of the conference for their kind collaboration.

MIIR may have been officially founded on January 2019, but its data-driven seedlings were planted earlier, in the form of twitter bots. Since December 2018, the MIIR team has been painstakingly working on tracking automated twitter accounts. All, in order to answer the following questions? Is automated political propaganda part of the Greek political discourse, and how large of a part it does it occupy?

How does it function and what kind of political content is being disseminated? Thousands of accounts have been analyzed, and annotated while the relations between them have been mapped and visualized with the aid of custom-build algorithmic tools.

Not all seeds germinate, but this one led to MIIR’s first investigation. Automated political propaganda features quite heavily in Greek political twitter, with political content from both of the main political parties being amplified by bots.

You can read the investigation here and also find a print version in today’s “Efimerida ton Syntakton” newspaper.

And don’t forget to subscribe to our newsletter, to receive more updates from our team.

Till later,

MIIR team
